Hirosada, Actor in a Kabuki Role

Konishi Hirosada (ca 1810 - 1864) Actor in Kabuki Role, 1849. Chuban.

A terrific print of an actor in an unread kabuki role. There is tremendous characterisation in the drawing of the figure. Hirosada uses the beautiful device of the curling storm in the background to emphasise the forward motion of the figure who carries a steely optimism and determination - ‘in the face of the storm’ - his hair loosely tied and pushed back by the wind. This is a portrait of determination, the face set to the wind, the shoulders hunched. Colour and impression are fine as is condition.
