Hirosada, Onoe Tamizo II as Tamaya Shimbei

Konishi Hirosada (ca 1810 - 1864) Onoe Tamizo II as Tamaya Shimbei from the play Echizen Mikuni Fufuzuka, 1849. Deluxe Chuban.

A moving portrait of the actor Onoe Tamizo II as Tamaya Shimbei from the play Echizen Mikuni Fufuzuka. There is a stillness to the this piece in contrast to the preceding print of Kataoka Ichizo, which is all action and contained violence. Here Hirosada shows a character of quiet forbearance and dignified restraint. The print is magical - the patterns here are sober and ordered, the curious diagonal lines of the clothing superimposed, seemingly at random over the rich trefoil decoration of the material, which is picked out in metallic bronze.

This deluxe print has exquisite delicacy to the fine, hair-like lines that describe the features. Elsewhere, the thick paper is deeply embossed or picked out in mica and metallic inks. The colour, condition and impression are all outstanding.

18cm x 25cm.
