Hiroshige II, 48 Views of Edo 14 - Shiba Shinmei Shrine

Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826 -1869) Forty-eight Views of Edo No 32: Shiba Shinmei Shrine, 1861. Chuban.

A very nice snow scene from Hiroshige II’s best chuban set of views of the provinces, Yonju Hakkei Meisho Edo. The title of the print is in the scroll cartouche to the left of the vertical series title cartouche. The number of the print appears on the furled edge of the scroll. This series dates from early in Hiroshige II’s career, when he was thirty-four years old. He had just started to use the name Hiroshige II, since his teacher and father in law Hiroshige had recently died (1858).

The print is a very nice snow scene, early impressions of this fine landscape set are difficult to find, and this is a particularly crisp example. This is an example of a fine, early impression with gauffrage to the foreground snow flakes, excellent colour and in very fine condition. Full size to three sides, the right hand side is trimmed nearly to the image.
