Kuniyoshi, The Four Seasons - Summer

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) The Four Seasons (Shiki no uchi): Summer (Natsu), 1843. Oban.

This delicate and sensitive print is from a little known series by Kuniyoshi from 1843, not listed in Kuniyoshi by Basil  Robinson. The picture is rich with incident and detail alluding to the summer months - the hovering dragonflies, and the loose fitting and revealing clothes of the young woman who is bent forward carrying a heavy bucket of water in her left hand and ladling water onto plants with her right hand.

The print is a very good impression with strong colours, full size. The condition is good, a repaired wormhole on the sun blind and some scuffing to the edges.
