Welcome to the Toshidama Gallery Christmas Selection of 2017, this year offering a massive 30% discount to newsletter subscribers. We have put together some terrific prints for your enjoyment, some with overtly wintry themes, such as Kiyochika's Ancient Patterns of Flowers: Hotoke Gozen with its superbly realised sense of chill - so much so that an antiquarian of a previous age mistook the shirabyoshi dancer Hotoke Gozen for the Spirit of Winter! Yoshitaki's Theatrical Snow Scene, depicting the young Kintaro and two fellow children engaged in a dance piece in a snowy theatre is another terrifically seasonable print with its wonderful snow Daruma.
Elsewhere we have a selection of ghosts and spirits, suitable for the time of year, including Kunichika's magnificent triptych of Tadanobu, the shape-shifting fox spirit, which also appears in an exquisite chuban by Kunisada, this time in the form of the fox Matagoro. Not forgetting, of course, Kunisada's wonderful image of Bando Hikosaburo as Hatsuhana, or rather the ghost of Hatsuhana, praying under a waterfall.
And fitting with the celebratory nature of the season are several prints marking festivals in the Edo calendar: Kunisada's Seven Herbs of Spring (Nanakusa), with its large gift-wrapped lobster, being one of the more festive!
There is a 30% discount for newsletter subscribers on all prints in this selection, applicable at the checkout. For your voucher code, please subscribe to the newsletter and when prompted to at the checkout, type in the voucher code to have 30% reduced from the total. I hope you will find many things to delight and inspire you from this festive exhibition, and if you have time to spare during the holiday period, please do visit our Gallery Blog and Wordpress site for essays on Japanese prints and Japanese Culture.
Toshidama Gallery would like to wish all our visitors and customers our very best wishes for the festive season.
